DESCRIPTION: Jan Drabek writes in two languages – one is Slavic Czech, the other the all-pervasive English. There are specific pitfalls to each one. Czech has seven cases while English doesn’t really give a damn about any cases and their wildly different endings. On the other hand, it has an incredible vocabulary. This talk will deal with the pitfalls in writing a book in each language; particularly with being brought up on Czech (with a two-hour German language training each school day forced by the Nazis), then as a teenager being thrown into the maelstrom of New York English. Eventually came the difficult task of re-inventing his Czech and polishing it up into a presentable non-schoolboy style.
